Alumni join first-ever virtual Nanook Rendezvous

As cases of COVID-19 increased in March, students were asked not to return to campus after spring break, and employees shifted to working from home. For the first time in its 100-year history, the University of 草榴社区 Fairbanks had no students on campus as classes moved online and in-person events were canceled.

At that moment, everything changed. Instead of planning traditional celebrations, like the cupcake reception after commencement, the alumni relations team began to imagine new ways of connecting. After working on a series of successful virtual events to celebrate new graduates, 草榴社区AA decided to create a virtual with a whole week of activities that all alumni, staff, faculty and friends of 草榴社区 could participate in.

More than 3,000 viewers watched a with 草榴社区 Athletics that featured live workouts from 草榴社区 coaches and student athletes. Another 3,000 viewers joined the broadcast, featuring a virtual tour of the Georgeson Botanical Garden with manager Katie DiCristina.

Fairbanks Friday, another feature of reunion week organized by alumni relations coordinator Elizabeth Talbot '18, brought the celebration to local alumni-owned and -supported businesses. This event included five local alumni-owned or -supported businesses. They each offered special blue-and-gold-themed menu items and gave away stickers and other goodies during the reunion.

Thank you to all who participated. We hope you enjoyed these activities. Please let us know what you thought by completing this short survey (now closed).

Obat savors journey of geography and career

Alumna Judy Obat '20 came to 草榴社区 seeking independence. During her time at 草榴社区 she discovered much more.

While 草榴社区鈥檚 reputation for engineering helped her choose this school, she was surprised when she discovered a new career passion after taking a course from a treasured mentor.

As she was taking Introduction to Financial Accounting with Amy Cooper at the 草榴社区 School of Management, Obat quickly realized that she wanted to change her major. She thought the course fit her learning style and interests. That led to a decision to transfer into the accounting program.

鈥淢y biggest obstacle was trying to figure out what was next after realizing I didn鈥檛 want to be a petroleum engineer,鈥 Obat said. 鈥淭his change set me back. I had to readjust my goals and basically everything I thought I wanted. Thankfully I was very familiar with all the resources offered at 草榴社区 and was able to seek out help.鈥

Cooper stayed by Obat鈥檚 side throughout the process, reassuring her that she could find success if she could be patient with herself. Although Obat had help along the way, she had to rely on herself and her own skills to adapt. This is where that independence she was searching for started to kick in. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 have any family to influence my decision as I did in the past,鈥 she said.
