Fairbanks: Our Homebase
Why Fairbanks?
Fairbanks is the perfect jumping-off point for thriving statewide research and education programs in oceanography, marine biology and fisheries. From the center of the state, we can easily access the 草榴社区 coastline, lakes, rivers, and communities that serve as a learning and research platform for our students and faculty. Our central location at the University of 草榴社区 Fairbanks, 草榴社区鈥檚 only PhD-granting institution, allows our researchers and students to benefit from collaborations with other scientific programs on campus, including the 草榴社区 Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, the Geophysical Institute, and the International Arctic Research Center. Our impact is global. Faculty conduct research all over 草榴社区 and the world, and students can take a majority of our courses from just about anywhere using our state-of-the-art videoconferencing capabilities.
Myriad scientific disciplines are studied at the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) Fairbanks campus, ranging from freshwater and saltwater ecology to oceanography in the polar regions.
CFOS is located in the O鈥橬eill, Irving II, Elvey, and Arctic Health Research buildings. The CFOS Dean and central office, the Institute of Marine Science, Coastal Marine Institute, Academic Programs office, classrooms, and several faculty and graduate student offices and labs are located in the O鈥橬eill building. Teaching and research labs, classrooms, and faculty offices for IMS and the Department of Fisheries are located in the Irving and Arctic Health Research Building.
Approximately 25 tenure-track faculty, more than half of the CFOS graduate students, and nearly all the fisheries undergraduate students call Fairbanks home.
