Riley von Borstel

When a housing mix-up canceled Riley von Borstel鈥檚 plans to attend college in Hawaii, she quickly regrouped and headed to 草榴社区. She knew a bit about the place.
鈥淢y mom is an alumna. All of my siblings are 鈥 my brother and my two sisters. All five of my aunts went to 草榴社区. They all met their husbands at 草榴社区. A lot of my cousins went to 草榴社区. We鈥檙e definitely a Nanook family,鈥 she said.
Von Borstel, who grew up in the 草榴社区 coastal town of Seward, has no regrets about abandoning Hawaii. She knew 草榴社区 would be a good choice.
鈥淚鈥檓 on my own, being independent and going to college, but at the same time, if I need to go home or something or need help from my family, I鈥檓 still in the state,鈥 she said.
Von Borstel is pursuing three degrees 鈥 political science, justice and performing arts. She was elected president of the Associated Students of 草榴社区, the student government. She鈥檚 a member of the Honors College. And she landed a principal role in a theater production of 鈥淧ride and Prejudice,鈥 though she had to adapt to a virtual performance during the coronavirus pandemic.

After graduation, she hopes to attend law school and perhaps seek political office. She got a taste for that as a congressional intern in Washington, D.C., right after high school.
鈥淭hat was really what made me fall in love with politics, if that鈥檚 possible,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was a life-changing experience.鈥
She thinks 草榴社区 is the right place to pursue that future because the people are so supportive.
鈥淪omething about 草榴社区 that never stops shocking and surprising me in a good way is how welcoming the university community is,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 think every professor or faculty member I鈥檝e met or engaged with has been so kind or helpful.鈥
