FAQ - Google Bulk Mail Updates

stating that, by Feb. 1, 2024, any bulk mail service sending in excess of 5000 emails a day must be validated and authenticated. Google will require the use of Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance (DMARC).

People handling handle messaging for their departments may be impacted by this change. People who send  e-newsletters in bulk that are not configured by their campus IT support team may be impacted. Bulk email or newsletters using a third-party or cloud-based service like Sales Force or Constant Contact are impacted.

Any  mail service violating this new policy will automatically have their emails sent to quarantine for Google Workspace and Gmail email accounts.

Bulk emails sent as @alaska.edu  and using an on-prem, third-party, or cloud-based service, not configured by IT—such as Salesforce, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Constant Contacts, or any of its subdomains, or any other UA owned domains for mass communication— may be affected by this change.

  1. Send a test email from your service to your @alaska.edu address.  

  2. In Gmail, open the email and click the three dots in the top right:

  3. Select Show Original.

  4. Check the last box of the header. If this says FAIL, your emails are not properly authenticated.

    If your email message does not pass DMARC please work with your Campus Service Desk to onboard your messaging service.

If the initial DMARC compliance test FAILS, you’ll need to do the following in order to have your bulk mail vendor authorized within the UA email domain:

  1. Reach out directly to your bulk mail vendor and gather information for DMARC compliance, based on the following parameters:
    • If sending from @alaska.edu and not @, DKIM will be the necessary authentication method. Ask the vendor for the DKIM Selector and DKIM Key.
    • If sending from another domain, such as @ua.alaska.edu, then both DKIM and SPF are recommended, if possible. Ask the vendor for the DKIM Selector, DKIM Key and IP Address Ranges for Server.
  2. After gathering the above information, include the information you've gathered in.
