Open new worlds of opportunity with a degree in foreign languages at 草榴社区. As the northernmost department of modern languages on the planet, we offer unique insights and experiences that will take you around the world and prepare you for careers in the global economy of the 21st century.

Our program gives you the opportunity to study French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. Depending on your preference, you can focus your degree on one or two languages. As a foreign languages major, you鈥檒l also have exciting opportunities to study abroad and experience other cultures firsthand.

Tailor a course of study based on your interests and career goals. The bachelor鈥檚 in foreign languages at 草榴社区 gives you the flexibility to focus your degree in a way that works best for you. You can choose between:

Single Language

Requires the study of one language-- German, Spanish or French--with an emphasis in cultural studies, usually requiring study abroad. Second language is not required for this option.

Two Languages

Includes at least 18 credits in first language and 15 in the second, all at the F200 level or above. Languages available are French, German, Japanese, or Spanish.

Offered Spring Even-numbered Years

Spanish for professionals is a course designed for students with a low-intermediate level of Spanish with an extensive focus on medical vocabulary, grammar structures and Hispanic/LatinX cultures. This course will help prepare medical professionals to effectively interact with their patients and/or clientele.

B.A., Japanese Studies

 
 

Japan
The Japanese Studies bachelor鈥檚 degree focuses on the acquisition of the four skills areas (reading, writing, 草榴社区, and speaking) in addition to the development of cultural awareness and competency. Our unique study abroad requirement enables students to develop advanced language skills while they gain firsthand knowledge of Japanese culture and society.

The B.A. in Japanese requires a concentration in the target language, plus coursework in other departments such as History, Geography, Political Science, Anthropology and Business. 

 

Study Abroad

Students majoring in Japanese studies are required to successfully complete at least one semester of an exchange program in Japan. Spending a full academic year abroad is strongly encouraged.

 
 

 

Traditions in Japan
Featured Course

JPN F332      Japanese Cultural Traditions and Arts      (h)
3 Credits

Offered Fall Even-numbered Years

A study of Japanese cultural traditions and arts as influenced by the religious and philosophical systems of Shinto, Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. Lectures will cover a wide range of Japanese traditional arts such as tea ceremony, calligraphy, martial arts, Noh, Bunraku, and Kabuki. Course is taught in English.

 

Minors

Minor, Foreign Languages

A Foreign Languages minor requires at least 15 credits in foreign language classes, with at least 12 of those credits taken at the 200-level or above.


Minor, Japanese Studies

A Japanese Studies minor requires at least 15 credits in Japanese classes, with at least 12 of those credits taken at the 200-level or above.


Minor, Asian Studies

Courses must be distributed among at least three departments and include material on at least two Asian countries. Students are strongly encouraged to include a semester or more of Asian language.
